Watchguard Authpoint big bang for a small buck

Rating: 8 out of 10
Incentivized

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

At my organization, we utilize WatchGuard Authpoint primarily as an MFA tool for accessing our VPN. This plays an important role for us as our VPN is the cornerstone of all development access and access to important encrypted files within our system. It addresses one of our main problems with most MFA tools, which is that it is hard to track when issues arise (for example MS and Goggle auth have no way to track). This tracking allows us to address any potential issues or attempted cyber security threats on our team in a swift manner, due to WatchGuard AuthPoint providing real time monitoring for us.

Pros

  • easily manages MFA for connecting to our VPN
  • "work app" for all MFA so users don't use Microsoft
  • streamlined setup process
  • Real time monitoring of all push notifications or logins used

Cons

  • push notifications often require the app to be open, make it so they send through the phone instead of the app (if possible)

Likelihood to Recommend

WatchGuard AuthPoint is well suited for smaller organizations like ours due to the fact that it is easy to re-position licenses, easy to use, and provides monitoring for our small team. For larger teams or teams that already use a full Microsoft business stack of products it may not be as useful due to the fact that the MS product does everything WatchGuard AuthPoint does already (notably while being more expensive)

WatchGuard provides a great bundle of solutions.

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

We use Watchguard for 2FA authentication and for updating and managing endpoints, the service for those is great and works like a charm. Customer service is very easy to talk to if you ever have an issue. I wish the menu were a little easier to navigate, but I am finally getting used to where everything is located. Overall, I would definitely recommend this service to anyone who needs a great, secure platform that is not shady and very trustworthy.

Pros

  • 2FA
  • Endpoint control
  • Remote Connection
  • Updates

Cons

  • Menu navigation.
  • Saving .
  • Easier setup.

Likelihood to Recommend

Works great as a 2FA token, for endpoint control, for computer and server updates, for scheduling updates, and for patching security features when exploits become known. Remote connection is very reliable and doesn't drop in and out as many programs do. It may not be as appropriate if you are looking for a plug-and-play control, as it requires more learning and setup to get it set up correctly.

WatchGuard AuthPoint personal review from [...]

Rating: 10 out of 10

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

WatchGuard AuthPoint is used in our organization to provide technical support to end users. As an IT Coordinator, there are times when I have to assist school-based therapists in order to reset their passwords because they are not on the same network as us. This is when they have to use the VPN.

So far, this is the only reason why I have had to use WatchGuard AuthPoint in our organization.

Pros

  • Connectivity
  • Effectiveness
  • Technical Support

Cons

  • Response time when an email is sent out to the support team.
  • Follow up email if the issue persists or not.
  • The support team should reach out via phone call to confirm if they can close the ticket.

Likelihood to Recommend

WatchGuard AuthPoint is well suited in my experience.

It is highly recommended to use if you have to support users who are not on the same network. It can be used for providing assistance with things like installing a printer or resetting passwords.

Use in Healthcare for VPN MFA by IT department employee

Rating: 9 out of 10

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

We use WatchGuard AuthPoint as the Multi-Factor Authentication method for connecting to Forticlient VPN so our end users can connect to our network remotely to access company resources securely.

This is used by all our end users with little to no technical expertise. I've found the set up for Authpoint to be very easy for the average person to follow, and though I've created 'guides' to walk people through the process, they typically do not need it as WatchGuard AuthPoint does an excellent job at walking people through the process alone.

Pros

  • Easy to setup
  • Quick to setup and use
  • Works consistently
  • Easy to reset token's when someone gets a new phone
  • Website is secure and requires MFA to sign on
  • App can enable MFA requirement to open and approve a push notification
  • App is easy to use

Cons

  • When adding a token, some people are confused by the 'token name'. A little blurb to say "This is just for your reference! You can make this the name of your company or the service that it provides MFA for" would be excellent.
  • I've had some people express confusion about the "red bar that keeps refilling and the 6-digit number that keeps changing". Some sort of statement to explain that would be great.
  • First-time use navigation - point out where the QR code scanning button is (I've managed to get a screenshot of the app to highlight it for our end users so they can find it easier).

Likelihood to Recommend

We use multiple authenticators at my company. We use WatchGuard AuthPoint just for our VPN for security purposes. The app works very well and over the past year we've only had a handful of issues with the authentication service, and these were resolved relatively quickly.

We do have to remind people to enable push notifications from the app, or have the app open when they need to use it to authenticate, otherwise they won't get the push to approve. The biggest issue I've found is that people will forget to do this and then say that the VPN isn't working - the VPN is working, it's just that they didn't get/approve the push from AuthPoint in time.

WatchGuard AuthPoint Works

Rating: 9 out of 10
Incentivized

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

We are a Managed Service provider that utilizes WatchGuard AuthPoint in many of our client's environments to protect VPS (IKE and SSL) as well as administrative access to devices and servers.

Pros

  • Push notification works well when you use the AuthPoint application.
  • OTP passwords work well as a backup method.
  • The application is an easy install on endpoints.

Cons

  • Would like for it to integrate with Microsoft Authenticator instead of using their own application.
  • Need to support more secure methods like number matching and/or facial recognition.

Likelihood to Recommend

We primarily utilize AuthPoint for remote access over VPN to secure the connection point. We also have the client installed on servers to protect login to critical systems.

WatchGuard AuthPoint your organization towards better security

Rating: 9 out of 10
Incentivized

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

We use WatchGuard AuthPoint to enable multi-factor authentication for our PCs, as well as for a TOTP authenticator app for third party accounts. WatchGuard AuthPoint is essential for securing our Windows PCs. Windows doesn't offer native Multi-factor authentication, so WatchGuard AuthPoint closes this gap. WatchGuard AuthPoint works with push notifications when offline, or OTP codes when not connected to Wifi.

Pros

  • MFA for Windows PCs
  • One-time password app
  • Offline authentication

Cons

  • Difficulties arise when a PC does not have internet access.
  • Sometimes push notifications don't appear
  • Occasionally asks for auth several times in a row

Likelihood to Recommend

Great tool for securing Windows PCs with MFA. Really every organization should be securing their staff PCs with MFA. Temporary one-time password functionality is great. Inevitably you will have numerous third party applications that require Multi-factor-authentication, and this tool helps you manage all of them. There is also a management console where you can monitor compliance and usage.

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

Since we are in the IT consulting field, we mostly use it for POC processes with customers regarding the use of AuthPoint for SSLVPN, Logon App, RDWeb, SAML, and similar integrations using WatchGuard AuthPoint. The business challenges it addresses include securing SSLVPN with AuthPoint, accessing servers using Logon App, including access to client desktops. RDWeb for accessing remote web services, and SAML for integration with Meraki Dashboard.

Pros

  • SSLVPN
  • SAML
  • RDWEB
  • Logon APP

Cons

  • For regular SSL VPNs, if third-party Open VPN still cannot integrate properly
  • Integration with WSM that is not yet possible
  • Improvement for password manager

Likelihood to Recommend

So far, it's been great for SSL VPN, Logon App, RDWeb, and SAML.

WatchGuard AuthPoint Usage

Rating: 8 out of 10
Incentivized

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

We use AuthPoint to meet compliance and security requirements for our clients. Using AuthPoint streamlines MFA for network equipment and windows devices. LDAP intergration allows for an easy way to authenticate windows domains.

Pros

  • Windows mfa
  • Single MFA platform to manage the entire WG infrastructure.
  • LDAP integration for on premise domains

Cons

  • Windows 2016-2019 authentication is finicky and WG knows about the issues. DUO on the other hand works great!
  • Customizable timeouts and failed push notifications.

Likelihood to Recommend

Best suited for managing WG appliances and meeting security requirements on windows devices by providing powerful MFA.

WatchGuard Authpoint is a solid VPN solution.

Rating: 8 out of 10

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

We are still very happy with our WatchGuard AuthPoint vpn. We have five very active users on it and it works very well for these users. My WatchGuard AuthPoint is managed by my IT vendor, but it works very well for our staff when they must work remotely and securely. Rather seamless once set up properly.

Pros

  • Secure VPN access.
  • Two-factor authnetication
  • Updates are not frustrating and while not invisible, not disruptive.

Cons

  • Could improve on reporting what kind of error is happening when login is wrong or account is having trouble with database, etc.

Likelihood to Recommend

It is very well suited when it is integrated in your firewall. I've had Dell solutions before that were stand-alone units and I do like that this is a feature of my Firebox firewall hardware. I don't have any of the lag or slowness I experience regularly on the old Sonicwall VPN solution.
