Why Veeam Backup

Rating: 8 out of 10
Incentivized

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

We are using the Veeam Data Platform for our Backups and changing the Virtual Infrastracture from HyperV to VMware. And Backup to Tape with the backups that Veeam created from our virtual and standalone servers. To restore data if something is missing or was accidentally deleted. And using a it to monitor if a server is outrunning memory.

Pros

  • Backup Data to Disk & Tape
  • Restore Data from Disk
  • Monitor Server Usage

Cons

  • Automatically erase Tape and put it into the tape pool.
  • SQL Data Backup

Likelihood to Recommend

For Backups to disk, Veeam is well-suited, but when it comes to backup to tape, it's not so good. It could be better with backup to tape. Indeed, when you want it to automatically erase and add tapes to the Tape Pool or mark the tape as free so Veeam can start backups on it.

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

Veeam Data Platform is our backup virtual infrastructure for all servers in all locations. The business problems this application resolves are restoring virtual machines to the production environment, backing up all infrastructure, and replicating data across infrastructures. The last scope is a backup for the probe backup file and a test of the disaster recovery option.

Pros

  • backup
  • restore
  • replication
  • sure backup
  • immutable backup
  • backup encriptation

Cons

  • license cost.
  • Immutable in all storage.
  • Sure backup.

Likelihood to Recommend

Scenario 1: replication between infrastructure from Cisco Hyperflex to Dell, with 0 downtime for the locations Mexico and Panama. All the jobs were created for priority, and the virtual machine was stopped in the source; the replication process was started, and the virtual machine was started in the new infrastructure. Scenario 2, less appropriate: restore a physical server from the Veeam agent at a remote location; the process was slow due to the communication link.

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

Backup of VMWare and Proxmox Virtual Machines. VM are Windows servers and Linux servers. Backup of about 30 Windows and Linux clients. Local backup of road warriors using the free backup client.

Pros

  • Easy to manage backups
  • Reliable recovery of data, disaster recovery of complete machine
  • Flexible backup of Linux clients, using SSH proxy

Cons

  • Windows client backup has option for entire computer, but it doesn't save other partition on same storage, like Linux partitions
  • Sometimes old recovery boot images does not work with newer Windows updates
  • Snapshot backup of Linux relies on a kernel module that was not updated for recent kernel versions, it should be kept up to date

Likelihood to Recommend

It's a reliable choice for backup of VMs, including Proxmox. No loss of data in about 10 years of use.

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

The Platform Veeam is used to backup and restore the PETL systems and servers. This platform covers a sensitive area to ensure that no files or systems are lost or damaged and can be restored in the shortest possible time.

This platform also helps us obtain external backups that can be easily migrated anywhere in the world, thus increasing the protection and security of our data from any internal or external circumstances.

Pros

  • Proactive Cyber Resilience and Intelligent Threat Detection
  • Recovery Data and System Speed and Flexibility
  • Actionable Insights and Continuous Validation
  • True Freedom and Data Portability

Cons

  • Security and Support Challenges from Vulnerability Management and analysis data
  • Technical Limitations and Gaps from SaaS Backup Gaps (Microsoft 365)
  • Web Based
  • Complexity in Licensing and Cost Management

Likelihood to Recommend

Scenario: A PETL runs its mission-critical ERP and Oracle databases on physical servers (for performance), its collaboration tools (email, file servers) on a VMware cluster, and has a strategic initiative to move development environments to AZURE. Why Veeam Fits: This is Veeam's sweet spot. It provides a single pane of glass to manage backup for all three. The ability to restore a system and data from the Veeam storage, a corrupted database from the physical server, and an entire virtual machine—all from the same console—eliminates the need for three different point products.
