Solid product for multi-cloud visibility, security, and compliance control

Rating: 9 out of 10

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

Our team of 8 managers a multi-cloud environment (AWS and AZURE). OpsCompass is a helpful tool for cloud security and also helps us implement configuration best practices and see any changes in real time. We started with the free trial. It was easy to sign up for and get started. Once we connected to our AWS and Azure instances, we were able to get a quick inventory of all of our cloud assets and understand the state of each. We like the built-in compliance policies. We used CIS to determine if we had the right configurations. If we didn't, the tool was good at identifying problems and making easy recommendations to improve the configuration. The compliance score was a great way to baseline and measure our progress and was something we shared with our team and our management.

Pros

  • Inventory discovery
  • Detecting unauthorized changes
  • Configuration drift
  • Infrastructure changes impacting cost
  • Measuring and benchmarking compliance
  • Scoring and reporting of risk
  • Helping our team do more with limited resources

Cons

  • I would like to see more integrations to help surface alerts. Slack would be great, as an example.
  • An imbedded tour or onboarding would help our new users, but overall, the product is pretty easy to figure out

Likelihood to Recommend

We previously had separate products to manage Azure and AWS, each with different capabilities, and it was very complex for our team to go back and forth and try to make sense of each environment. OpsCompass is very well suited to give you a single view of our entire cloud environment. OpsCompass also brings excellent compliance policies. We were not highly skilled with these policies, but the product made it easy to perform an assessment of our current state and identify areas where we had non-compliance issues. CIS policies were a great area to start and we later tried the Microsoft 365 policies, which were also helpful. More policies would be great to see.

Game-changer for our DevOps team

Rating: 9 out of 10

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

Our small DevOps/CloudOps team uses OpsCompass to track the cloud resources in our AWS instances. When we started using it, we set a baseline of cloud resources--and OpsCompass runs daily scans to detect any changes compared to the baseline. It's been an extremely helpful tool to provide us with a clear, up-to-date view of all the resources in our clouds. Before OpsCompass, getting a complete inventory of resources was surprisingly hard, and now it's surprisingly easy. We can detect which resources have increased and whether those changes came from a user or a system.

We recently added resource costs to OpsCompass, which now gives us the cost impact of the changes happening in our AWS instance. This will easily pay for OpsCompass--instead of a bill from AWS for last month's unexpected cost surges, we'll see them right away and can intercept unexpected cost increases.

Pros

  • Quick inventory of all my cloud resources
  • Detects changes to my cloud resources--including the source of the changes (user or system)
  • Cost impacts of changes to my cloud infrastructure

Cons

  • I don't use the CIS compliance features yet--I'd like to try those.
  • Currently, OpsCompass is a scan-only tool. I'd like OpsCompass to be able to prevent some types of resource changes--it would be a big help with handling potential security concerns.

Our AWS Cloud was a perfect fit for OpsCompass. We needed a better method for understanding the size/extent of our Cloud--rather than the manual approach we'd been using. It's saved us a lot of time, and allowed us to delay adding additional heads for at least six to nine months.

It also gives us a better/faster grasp of potential security issues - we see them right away, and we can assess each issue far faster than ever before.

When we expand to Azure, Ops Compass will be able to do the same thing for us. (We have no plans to expand into Google Cloud Platform, but Ops Compass works well in all 3 clouds, apparently.)
